Here is part two of three on the topic “Having a vision”. My vision is for our gym to be “the best” and we will use our mission statement and brand promise as the guidlines to accomplish this vision.
2. MS- We strive to stay current and relevant in our instruction and class offerings.
In the book “The Passion of Command: The Moral Imperative of Leadership” by Col. Bryan McCoy, USMC, he talks about being “brilliant at the basics.” Everything we do has a foundation on “the basics,” and what separates the good from the great is how they will perform the basic movements and patterns. In BJJ it’s solid grips, hips and base. In MMA it’s striking, grappling and BJJ (grips, hips, base). In fitness its consistency and nutrition. For business it’s always know their name, treat them with respect, make sound decisions on the big stuff every time and on the little stuff most of the time. The basics are often over look after about one year in a sport (usually by the athlete). Then 7-10 years down the road (if they stick with it) it is realized that most mistakes are because missing a component of the basics. No one ever said it was going to be easy, even the “simplest skill takes extreme effort!
Col. McCoy also talks about “leading from the front,” which is why our coaches compete in BJJ, put themselves through every workout, write articles and interview nationally on sports performance and fitness related topics. In MMA our coaches have been in the ring/cage and put 12 hard weeks of training in for a fight. We’ve all been there.
The longer I train, run a business and lead people in the fire service the more I realize that “being brilliant at the basics” and “leading from the front” lends more credit to leadership than any belt or title.
