Thanks to the advice of a good friend, Michael Richeson I have decided to start a weekly discussion on our class schedule at Impact Jiu Jitsu Newberg. All of our current BJJ members know (or should know) that we use a weekly training schedule for our BJJ 1 and BJJ 2 classes and this schedule rotates yearly.
The foundation for our schedule in the BJJ 1 class is our blue belt curriculum; the blue belt curriculum is base on being “Brilliant at the basics”. There is a lot of repetition and very deliberate step by step coaching on “how” to perform a technique. While the BJJ 1 class is mostly attended by four strip white belts to the brand new member, all belt levels are welcome to attend. If more advanced members show up, we will stay with the BJJ 1 schedule.
The foundation for our schedule in the BJJ 2 class is a lot like the BJJ 1 except we focus on the “why” aspect of each technique in the curriculum. There is also a greater focus on positions and the concepts of positional control. This class is mostly attended by our blue belts and above, even though all belt levels are welcome to attend. If a white belt member attends, the expectation is “Do what you can, because some of this is going to be hard to follow”. We will not slow the pace of the class down to coach the “how” portion of a technique when everyone else is working on the “why”.
So my intention with a weekly discussion on the schedule is to give a little background on why each class was chosen and to create healthy discussion (two way communication) with a larger group. Please comment, it will only make us all better!
